New Amazing Spiderman video game villain revealed – Iguana

No, you’re not reading this wrong. Beenox just released a new villain trailer for a villain known as Iguana, who looks eerily similar to the upcoming movie of the same name’s villain, Lizard.

The difference between Iguana and Lizard is that Iguana is a genetic experimentation gone wrong.

Iguana is a villain not many Spiderman fans have heard of. The villain only appeared in three comics of the Spectacular Spiderman series back in July of 1979: issues #32 – #34.

In the comics, Iguana acts as a spiritual successor to the Lizard, after Dr. Curt Connors was experimenting on iguanas, creating an accidental life-sifed version of one, embedded with parts of Dr. Connor’s lifeforce and memories, as well as the personality of Connor’s alter-ego, the Lizard.

In light of the trailer released by Beenox, the company also provided a full bio and background of the new villain:

Of all the cross-species to come out of Oscorp, only Iguana was never claimed as a creation of any of the company’s scientists. That’s because its true creator, Curt Connors himself, had no idea that one of his own former experiments would evolve to its current fearsome form.

Connors’ go-to lab animal, an iguana he referred to as “Iggy,” had weathered so many odd experiments over the past few months, it was a wonder the small reptile was still alive. Somewhere along the way, Connors had injected Iggy with a formula that appeared to have no effect at all. And it didn’t – at least not in and of itself. What this particular injection did manage, however, was to serve as a catalyst that slowly warped and mutated intended effects of other experimentations upon the animal for months to come.

Shortly after Connors became the Lizard, Iguana revealed himself within the walls of Oscorp in all his seven-foot glory. As it turns out, after gestating for months, all of the strange science going on inside Iggy’s body had come to a head in the course of a couple hours, morphing him into the remarkable being terrorizing Manhattan today.

According to Gamezone.com, one of Iguana’s main abilities is its scream, in order to influence or mind control other creatures affected by the cross-species virus.  So far, the only other cross-species villain revealed for the game is Rhino. So will this be a consistent theme in the game?

According to Beenox art director Moïse Breton, the Iguana that has been brought to the game and modernized has undergone its share of changes, some that the comic fans may not be used to.

“The visual approach is less cartoony, which makes for really interesting details. He is also permanently mutated and does not return to his original form during the day,” explained Breton. “Therefore, he must hide in the dark corners of Manhattan in his effort to survive.”

“In the spirit of the film reboot, we’re taking a more realistic and grounded approach to the game, including the characters and villains. We also wanted to have a clear separation between the Lizard and Iguana.  While you can still feel the humanity behind the Lizard, Iguana is purely a genetic experiment gone wrong.”

Not exactly a fresh face, but since the game supposedly takes place after the events of the first movie, the events called into questions spawning Iguana’s creation fit with the original comic story, although told in a more modernized fashion.

What do you have to say about this so-called Lizard look-a-like as a new villain? The Amazing Spiderman videogame drops on June 26th, 2012.
